(AINA) -- Six Copts were shot by an off-duty policeman on a train between Assiut and Cairo on Tuesday. One Copt was killed and five remain in critical condition.
The gunman, identified as Amer Ashour Abdel-Zaher, was on his way to work in Beni Mazar police station when he boarded the train at approximately 17.00 hours in the town of Samalout in Egypt's Minya province, roughly 260 km south of Cairo. He shot the six Copts after chanting "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is Great) then attempted to flee but was apprehended by passengers.
Fathy Ghattas, a 71-year-old Coptic Christian, died immediately. His wife Emily Hanna underwent an operation to remove her left kidney and spleen. She is in intensive care. Another Coptic woman, Sabah Saniod, 54, underwent an operation on her liver. Three of the injured Copts, Marianne, Maggie and Ashraf, were flown by helicopter to Kasr-el-Aina teaching hospital in Cairo for further treatment.
The communique issued by the Egyptian interior Mministry said the gunman shot randomly at the train passengers, while according to the Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm the assailant had checked passengers for the green cross traditionally tattooed on the wrists of Coptic Christians in Egypt. After identifying several Copts, the gunman shot at them.
The Ministry of Interior later said that the assailant was "mentally unstable" and had been undergoing medical treatment for some time. The Governor of Minya denied any sectarian motives behind the incident and said that the assailant is unstable and shot indiscriminately at passengers.
The Coptic Diocese of Minya said that the perpetrator went up and down the train compartment before shooting at the Copts while chanting Islamic chants.
Dr.Naguib Ghabrial, head of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights Organizations, described the incident as a premeditated "sectarian" attack, aimed at the Copts, since they sat together and sang Christian hymns, and the assailant shouted Allahu Akbar three times before shooting.
Ghabrial criticized the Interior Ministry for downplaying the shooting as usual. "The gunman did not shoot at random, otherwise Muslims would have been wounded as well," Ghabrial told BBC Arabic TV. "This is one in the series of attacks aimed at Copts, before this there was the Alexandria Massacre."
"I am sorry that the Ministry hastily issued a statement that the assailant was mentally unstable." Said Ghabrial. " Would someone who is mentally unstable be issued with a weapon and ammunition, would he be able to differentiate between Copts and Muslims?" he said. "I am telling the Interior Minister do not under-estimate Coptic intelligence and do not undervalue Coptic blood, for Coptic blood is not cheap." He called once again for the minister to resign after all these Coptic Massacres.
Coptic activist Mariam Ragy reported that a clash took place between Muslim youth and more than 200 angry Coptic protesters who converged outside the Good Shepherd Hospital, which belongs to the Coptic Diocese of Samalout, where the wounded were brought. The police tried to disperse the Copts with tear gas, rubber bullets and stones. Several Copts were injured (video showing security hurling stones and firing tear gas at Copts in front of hospital).
Father Estephanos Shehata from Samalout Diocese said in an interview on Coptic channel Hope-Sat that witnesses told him the policeman called out Allahu Akbar and shot the Copts who were in the cabin. He confirmed the clashes between Copts and security forces outside the hospital. "Security fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the crowd. Live ammunition was also fired but not by security, we do not know who fired them," he said.
On January 11, Egypt recalled its ambassador to the Vatican for consultation over comments made by Pope Benedict XVI following the bombing of the Christian Coptic church in Alexandria on New Year's Eve which killed 23 and injured more than 100. The Pope commented that the mass attack "offends God and all of humanity." He called on world leaders to protect Egypt's Copts.
Egyptian foreign ministry issued a statement saying "Egypt will not allow any non-Egyptian faction to interfere in its internal affairs under any pretext. The Coptic question is specifically an internal Egyptian affair."
Commenting on tonight's train shooting incident, Coptic activist Mark Ebeid said "What will the government now have to say to the international community? Will they still argue that the Coptic question is specifically an internal Egyptian affair when nearly every 10 days they are massacred?"

Push back the oppression of Islam with Dr Terry Jones
As we go in to the New Year, Stand Up America! is picking up momentum!
Our radio and TV work is growing. We partner with The Truth TV (truthsat.tv) in California, which broadcasts to millions around the world. With rallies and protests, along with the media coverage we receive, we continue to stand for freedom of speech and religion. We are not hiding behind the church walls. We are out in the public eye, speaking the truth.
There is a great chance we can push back the oppression of Islam to give room for the growth of Christianity all over the world, to give room for freedom to make that choice.
Islamic Law (Sharia) is totalitarian, crushing basic human rights. There is no separation of church and state. It must be accepted without criticism. Daily life and decisions are subject to the laws of Allah as interpreted by the local imams and mullahs. Men are sovereign in their homes and communities, responsible for discipline and order, which is often harshly and violently administered. In Islam women are inferior possessions of men. This attitude leads to mistreatment and abuse for which Muslim men receive little or no punishment. A Muslim does not have the right to change his religion. Apostasy is punishable by death. Honor killing, rape, pedophilia, polygamy, corruption and lying are all given a pass under Islamic teaching.
This is not isolated to Islamic lands. Muslims in the West do not find it easy, or are simply not willing to abide by Western laws because of the demands of Sharia. Increasingly, Muslims are not prosecuted in the same manner as Westerners because judges, law enforcement agencies and governments do not want to offend and anger these communities. How many suffer under this oppression in silence?
Astonishingly, Islamic states have a powerful voice at the United Nations and dominate the Human Rights Council, while Western governments seem helpless or unwilling to challenge their atrocious human rights records. Where is the freedom of religion in Islamic homes, societies and countries? Why do Western governments make it so difficult for ex-Moslems to find asylum in our lands?
The current US Administration is generous with immigrant visas to Pakistani Moslems, for instance, but Pakistani Christians with family members here ready to support them, and in danger every day of persecution and death find it almost impossible to come here.
Christians are being persecuted, jailed, kidnapped and killed in Egypt. Church building permits are denied, renovations to churches are opposed. Yet the US Government does not challenge the Egyptian government’s lack of protection for Christians. In the US Embassy there, Christians applying for immigration face an obstacle of hostile Muslim employees.
Churches are burned and cannot be rebuilt in Indonesia. Christians are executed on Fridays in Saudi Arabia, men and women are punished by stoning and amputations, but the media does not care about any of this, and Western governments do not react. Is a friendly relationship with these governments more important than religious freedom and the eternal souls of men, women and children? We demand change!
Prospects are very good for our expanded work in Europe, where we have much support, and a growing amount of media coverage, especially in Britain where the subject of banning my entry to the country is being discussed. We pray that door will stay open. The United Nations in New York, Washington DC, and Canada are also in our sights for rallies. We will knock on doors and influence key politicians and leaders around the world.
We commit to continue this work in every possible way, no matter what opposition we meet. The possibilities, of course, are multiplied greatly by your financial support. We need to stand together for the truth!

Muslims burn crosses in Egypt

Islamic supremacists in Egypt are very different from the KKK, but as they burned crosses in their recent clashes with Copts, their motive is the same as that of the KKK: to intimidate, to frighten. They want to "strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of Allah" (Qur'an 8:60).
An update on this story. "Egypt: Coptic pope Shenuda III deplores 'anti-Christian' violence," from AKI, November 24 (thanks to all who sent this in):
Egypt's Coptic Pope Shenuda III on Wednesday deplored the violent clashes with security forces in Cairo's Giza district when thousands of minority Christians marched to demand permission from the government to build a church.
Shenuda III was quoted by pan-Arab daily al-Quds al-Arabi as saying he wanted to "forcibly resist action of this kind."
He said he wanted to "work to restore calm and prevent further acts of violence in the city."
A group of Muslims reportedly gathered in the area of Giza where some 3,000 Coptic Christians were reported to have protested outside the office of the local governor.
The Muslims reportedly set several crucifixes alight and threw stones at the Copts....

I've been to Egypt (right after 9/11) and noticed the high percentage of men wearing white robes and funny hats. I didn't make the connection at the time, though.
My question is: Does the hate-filled ideology provoke the crazy costumes, or do the crazy costumes provoke the hate-filled ideology?
Whichever it is, it seems to turn into a viscious circle.

You have got to be kidding. A report reportedly reported that Muslims burned crosses? I know that this site is really bad for quoting unreliable sources, but this is ridiculous. Let's try reading something even remotely accurate.
The issue of church construction is always a hot one in Egypt, and the only one where Christian groups abroad have actual evidence against the state so they scream the loudest on this. However, both local and international groups have admitted that there are just about as many Christians per church as there are Muslims per mosque (about 1,300), and that this has nothing to do with the prohibition of worship, but is primarily a bureaucratic obstacle. Is it discriminatory? YES, and it should be addressed by a new united places of worship law that non-religious NGOs have been pushing for in the country. However, to go out on another rampage against Muslims just shows us yet again that Spencer has absolutely no idea what he's talking about and that he cares about nothing more than bashing Muslims.
And just to prove my point, he will probably directly respond to this post even though he has repeatedly stated that he doesn't really read what is written in the comments.

Still the leaders of the West don't get it, will they get it when a big Muslim is standing over them with a knife to their throat? Somehow I don't think even that will be enough to wake them up. They'll just keep sending them money to fight terrorism and not even demand to know where the money was spent.

What an incredibly ludicrous post. It reeks of dhimmitude at the least and a sneering Islamist supremacism at the most.
It is a matter of fact that Christians and Jews are on the receiving end of acts of intimidation and violence at the hands of Muslims in all Muslim-majority countries, and Muslims justify their actions based on numerous verses in the Qur'an and Hadiths directing them to subdue and persecute Christians and Jews and to prohibit the construction of new churches and synagogues or the repair of existing ones.
As you may recall, thousands of pigs belonging to Coptic farmers were killed a few months ago on the pretext that thay were an H1V1 (Swine Flu) threat. This and many other acts of intimidation and humiliation are par for the course in so-called "moderate" Egypt. And I will not go into the numerous acts of murder and intimidation of Christians and Jews in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and other lands dominated by the "religion of peace".
As far as Robert Spencer addressing your supercilious post, he has more meaninful business to attend to, I am sure.
If you cannot do any better than your previous post, please don't waste our time...

If we could form an alliance here in the west and burn a Hamas flag, al Qaeda flag,an Egyptian flag, the moon and star rag, you get the picture, and do it in the name of protest of the Egyptian cross burning, we might make a strong statement. Do those idiots actually have flags? If not, let's do the Muslim crescent flag.

It is a matter of fact that Christians and Jews are on the receiving end of acts of intimidation and violence at the hands of Muslims in all Muslim-majority countries, and Muslims justify their actions based on numerous verses in the Qur'an and Hadiths directing them to subdue and persecute Christians and Jews and to prohibit the construction of new churches and synagogues or the repair of existing ones.
As you may recall, thousands of pigs belonging to Coptic farmers were killed a few months ago on the pretext that thay were an H1V1 (Swine Flu) threat. This and many other acts of intimidation and humiliation are par for the course in so-called "moderate" Egypt. And I will not go into the numerous acts of murder and intimidation of Christians and Jews in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and other lands dominated by the "religion of peace".
As far as Robert Spencer addressing your supercilious post, he has more meaninful business to attend to, I am sure.
If you cannot do any better than your previous post, please don't waste our time...

I believe in freedom of expression. If we could form an alliance here in the west and burn a Hamas flag, al Qaeda flag,an Egyptian flag, the moon and star rag, you get the picture, and do it in the name of protest of the Egyptian cross burning, we might make a strong statement. Do those idiots actually have flags? If not, let's do the Muslim crescent flag.

Where's Hussein Obama's voice, at least once, since he's been claiming now to be a Christian, to condemn such provocative act of Cross burning; as Hussein had easily condemned the Christian Pastor who wanted to burn the Bible?! Something needs to be done! Burning the Quran is not the way it should be done. But Muslim society believes they can do what they like.
The burning of poppies, during the two minutes silence, should have been dealt with by force.
That is our country honouring the people who died fighting for us. If you dislike Britain and its soldiers you should be deported as this is our country, not yours! You are a guest here and should play by our rules, not do as you wish. Something needs to be done before it is too late!
Violence: it’s the only thing I see from the Muslim community. All they do is threat, kill and protest. They aren't reasonable. And they believe that it is within their religion that they can get away with these things.
I feel that this country is at risk and that the Government will not make a stand. I do not feel safe with the current Government as they lay down and take this abuse.
If something is not done soon, people will start taking it into their own hands. This could end very badly for Britain if the Government does not start taking control.
The Government should stand up for its country’s people and not others!
I hope everyone reading this understands what I do.
The amount of disrespect Muslims show towards this country would suggest they do not want to be here. However they do stay here, as they know it is a safer and more secure option.
We let them come and live here but do we receive any gratitude? No!
I hope something is done about this soon. Before it gets worse.
